I am really excited to let you know about some new courses that we have been able to arrange for early 2015 - actually these courses have all been requested from AAP Education membership.
Presented by Mr. Mark Oliver (certified Mulligan concepts teacher), this 2 day practical workshop provides participants with new examination and treatment skills for TMJ disorders (utilising Mulligan's principals).
Appropriately trained manual therapists can assist greatly in management of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). The manual therapist must have a sound knowledge of TMJ and orofacial anatomy, the role of postural disorders and spinal dysfunction on TMD, the ability to perform and evaluate an eclectic physical examination and the ability to carry out appropriate physical treatment. In addition, the manual therapist must have a sound appreciation of dental management of TMD and be able to fit effectively into a multi-disciplinary dental treatment team. The purpose of this course is to provide manual therapists with the appropriate knowledge and skills to carry out an effective, precise TMJ evaluation and treatment plan.

This course is an opportunity to enhance your skills in managing complex neck pain disorders that are often associated with headache, jaw pain, and dizziness. The presenter Dr Shaun O’Leary, is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists). Shaun divides his time between his clinical practice (Zest Physiotherapy), research (Principal Research Fellow at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital), and teaching (Senior Lecturer in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland). Shaun utilizes a minimalist common sense approach in the management of neck pain that is informed by research but directed by clinical reasoning.
While managing chronic neck pain often requires a multi-factorial approach, one particular challenge is in the early identification of key movement impairments and functional deficits that underlie the patient’s disorder. These can often be addressed with exercise and manual therapy. With regard to exercise, the key to successful exercise prescription is to provide specific but simple exercise that is manageable for the patient, and is adequately progressed. Commonly we prescribe exercise programs that are not specific enough and are not adequately progressed to meet the patients’ individual needs. Additionally programs often contain too many exercises, which can aggravate symptoms and compromise adherence and therefore success.

Our 2015 invited overseas speaker is Dr. Nick Clark, who has recently completed his PhD in this area. In the UK Nick presents a range of courses focused on the lower limb kinetic chain. We are fortunate to have him present 3 of the most popular courses here in Australia.
